Stepping Stone Competition 2021

String Quartet Junior Ensemble-in-Residence

The Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Music is launching the very first edition of a new event: the Stepping Stone Competition for strings quartets. Ensembles will compete for the position of Junior Ensemble-in-Residence with the Faculty.

The winning string quartet will receive a $10,000 scholarship and will be actively involved in Faculty of Music projects. In addition to participating in Orchestre de l’Université de Montréal concerts as well as to projects of the Ensemble de musique contemporaine de l’Université de Montréal, the winning ensemble will have the opportunity to perform in the concert halls of the Faculty of Music, either on its own or with Faculty members.

Quartet members will benefit from mentorship from the Faculty’s String Area, as well as acting themselves as mentors for students enrolled at the institution. The ensemble will also have access to a rehearsal room in the Faculty of Music building.

The duration of the residency is one year, from September 1, 2021, to August 31, 2022, and is renewable once.

To be eligible, applications must include:

  • A letter of motivation
  • The quartet’s biography
  • A biography of each member of the quartet
  • Recordings totalling 30 minutes with excerpts from three distinct periods: Classical, Romantic and Contemporary

Applications must be sent before 15 May 2021 to communication@musique.umontreal.ca

After review of all applications received, finalists will be asked to submit to an interview.

The results of the Université de Montréal Faculty of Music Stepping Stone Competition will be announced at the end of May 2021.
