Atelier d’opéra de l’UdeM
Richard Margison and Robin Wheeler, Atelier d’opéra direction

Performing for the very first time at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts’ Bourgie Hall, the UdeM Opera Studio presents an exciting musical journey through great opera arias. Since its official birth in 17th-century Italy, opera has exerted a continuous attraction on composers, many of whom have left us memorable works. Combining theater and music, the genre fascinates and deeply moves us. Let yourself be seduced by the remarkable voices of Faculty of Music students in classical singing, and enjoy stirring moments courtesy of excerpts from the most celebrated lyric scores accompanied on the piano.

On the program are works by Bernstein, Donizetti, Gounod, Humperdinck, Mozart, Tchaïkovski and Verdi.

In the constantly evolving sphere of music research and performance, timbre is often seen as a unique imprint characterizing each performer or instrument. However, recent studies have brought to light the limitations of this essentialist conception, emphasizing that timbre is rather a product of performative practice, of musical and cultural context. Thus, timbre, as expressive as it is, is not an entity isomorphic to identity, but a vehicle capable of communicating a variety of identities, be they authentic or constructed.

The event “Voix, timbre(s), identités(s)” approaches this complexity from several perspectives: cultural, gendered, historical and stylistic. Beyond musicological and philosophical questions, speakers will explore creative and educational implications, particularly in vocal and operatic music. They will probe the style and technique of operatic singing, as well as the impact of timbral diversity in opera, especially from the standpoints of culture and identity.

Hosted by Patrick Giguère and Kit Soden, this activity is presented in collaboration with the Université de Montréal’s Canada Research Chair in Opera Creation and is also part of the Place à la recherche-création event series, resulting from a collaboration between the Innovation Laboratory of the University of Montreal and Campus Vivant.

Ensemble de musique contemporaine de l’UdeM
Jean-Michaël Lavoie, direction

Plunge straight to the heart of a dialogue between contemporary instrumental music and digital creation at this intimate concert presented in Livart’s underground space. Musicians from the Ensemble de musique contemporaine mix with the audience to perform three instrumental and mixed works, brought together into a continuous experience by means of electroacoustic interludes.

The works by Vaka, O’Callaghan and Simms explore each in their own way the special relationship between performers and their instruments. Based on that premise, student-composers Antonin Gougeon-Moisan and Simon Chioini have conceived a journey in sound in which the proximity and presence of the musicians testify to that personal relationship, evoking a sharing, an offering.

This concert, lasting approximately one hour, is presented without intermission.
