Gershwin approaches symphonic writing from a jazz angle; with Gordon Goodwin, the clarinet gives itself over to some remarkable acrobatics; and Mozart flirts with jazz: for its first concert of the season the UdeM Big Band surfs the Third Stream, a captivating fusion of jazz and classical music. This opening concert of the OUM season will showcase young instrumentistalists, welcome the second-prizewinner in the OUM Concerto Competition and conductor Adam Johnson, a graduate of the Faculty of Music currently enjoying a brilliant career.
Evangelista, who taught at the Faculty of Music from 1979 to 2009, draws inspiration from the classical music of India and the concept of raga in Alap & Gat. Fascinated by the Scottish landscapes he discovered on a holiday trip, Mendelssohn re-created their atmosphere in his Third Symphony. And as for Shostakovich, he composed his Concerto No. 2 for his son, creating a cheerful work imbued with light-hearted humor and a poetry filled with freshness.
