McGill-UdeM Piano-Vocal Arts Residency

A new and unique high-level program, this residency is intended for advanced pianists specializing in the vocal arts.

Under the co-direction of Michael McMahon (Schulich School of Music, McGill University), Francis Perron (Université de Montréal Faculty of Music), and the coordination of Pierre-André Doucet, the six pianists chosen for this residency will immerse themselves in the recital and opera repertoire, in addition to developing their skills as accompanists and vocal coaches.

This intensive nine-month program runs from September to May.

Thanks to an extraordinary philanthropic commitment, each candidate accepted into the McGill-UdeM Piano-Vocal Arts Residency will receive a full scholarship and a living stipend.

Two exceptional music institutions

A truly one-of-a-kind program, the McGill-UdeM Piano-Vocal Arts Residency offers students opportunities for advancement at two exceptional academic institutions:

  • the Université de Montréal Faculty of Music
  • the Schulich school of Music at McGill University

Located in the heart of Montréal, these two universities will soon be linked by a new rapid transit system, the Réseau express métropolitain.

So as to cover a broad range of specializations, styles and repertoire, the McGill-UdeM Piano-Vocal Arts Residency provides students with opportunities to work under the guidance of major international artists and experts:

  • Vocal artists
  • Pianists and accompanists
  • Conductors
  • Lyric diction coaches
  • Specialists in literary interpretation and historical performance

Professional development

Within the context of the program, financial support is offered to each resident pianist so that they may carry out a career development project (attending an approved, internationally-recognized workshop, academy or internship program, producing a concert, recording or tour in relation with the program, etc.).

Prerequisites

  • Admission is open to candidates from Canada and abroad.
  • Pianists holding a minimum of an undergraduate degree or the equivalent and having significant experience in vocal accompaniment are eligible.

Important dates

To be considered for admission to the McGill-UdeM Piano-Vocal Arts Residency, pianists must follow a three-step process:

1. Applications for admission

Candidates must submit applications to both the Université de Montréal Faculty of Music and the Schulich School of Music at McGill University before December 20, 2023.

Candidates holding a BMus must apply to the DESS in Piano Accompaniment at l’Université de Montréal and the Graduate Diploma in Performance at McGill.

Candidates holding graduate diplomas must apply to the DEPA in Piano Accompaniment at l’Université de Montréal and the Post-Graduate Artist Diploma in Performance at McGill.

2. Preliminary auditions

In addition to these applications for admission, candidates are required to send their video recordings to the program coordinator by December 20, 2023 at the following email address: pierre.andre.doucet@umontreal.ca

 3. Final auditions

Results from the preliminary round will be communicated in early January, after which auditions will be held on February 10, 2024. In-person auditions are preferable, but a live online audition is also possible.

 

Application specifications

  • When submitting your application, it is important to indicate “McGill-UdeM Piano-Vocal Arts Residency” in the comment section.
  • For administrative reasons, it is mandatory for candidates to submit complete applications to both l’Université de Montréal and McGill University.
  • Students who hold a Master’s degree must apply to the DEPA in Accompaniment.
  • Students who hold a Bachelor’s degree must apply to the DESS in Accompaniment.
