Winds
Woodwinds and brass
Wind students will find a team of teachers at the Université de Montréal Faculty of Music recognized as much for their careers as performers on the international scene as for their teaching skills.
In addition to performing as soloists and chamber musicians, our professors are members of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the Orchestre Métropolitain, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Arion Baroque Orchestra, the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM, in residence at the Université de Montréal Faculty of Music), the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec and Pentaèdre, among other ensembles.
The excellence of the teaching offered is enhanced by a profoundly human approach: each student in this context is closely monitored and guided as he or she progresses through the program.
The presence of our graduates in numerous ensembles on international stages moreover testifies to the quality of our programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels.
Concerts, competitions and masterclasses for a deeply formative experience
The performance potential of our wind students develops and thrives not just because of the personalized approach of the faculty but also thanks to the many opportunities for learning available to them.
The program encourages regular participation in masterclasses: clarinetist Martin Frost, horn player Sarah Willis and bassoonist Nadina Mackie-Jackson are among the invited guests at the Faculty of Music.
Moreover, opportunities to perform in concert in one of the Faculty halls are numerous, whether as soloist, chamber player or orchestral musician. Throughout their training, students thus get to prepare for the multiple facets of a career as a musician by joining a number of Université de Montréal Faculty of Music ensembles:
- Orchestre de l’Université de Montréal
- Atelier de musique baroque
- Ensemble de musique contemporaine
- Ensemble de cuivres
- Various chamber music ensembles
Lastly, every year the Orchestre de l’Université de Montréal concerto competition crowns three prizewinners from the different Faculty of Music performance programs, who perform in concert with the orchestra at Salle Claude-Champagne. Students also have the opportunity of participating in numerous other competitions at the faculty, national and international levels.
